Matcha for Skincare. Glow, Baby, Glow – A Look at the Effects of Matcha on Skin.
Skin care isn’t one of the hot topics in most Jamaican circles ; make-up, lashes and other forms of beautification, yes, but nourishing the skin that lies beneath, not so much. This seems somewhat counter-intuitive though, because having healthy skin as a base helps to make the beautification process easier and more effective. So it makes sense for us to give some tender love and care to our skin then, doesn’t it?
Many of us struggle with one skin issue or another and we tend to just work around them (a little concealer ain’t never hurt nobody!). But what happens if you need to go makeup free (yes, that’s actually a thing)? Nobody wants to feel like their flawed skin is stealing the spotlight. So how do we tackle some of these skin issues?
Spoiler alert….Matcha IS going to be involved in the process! Let’s address Matcha skincare benefits!
Dat bumpy face gyal (Acne)
Acne. Some are fortunate to never be visited by this body-invader that finds the worst time and worst places show up. Many people who do struggle with acne ‘get over’ it after their teenage years. But for those haunted by it in adulthood, the struggle is real. You know what else is real? Those dermatologist bills! Don’t get me wrong, I went to the dermatologist during my war with acne years ago. There were follow-up visits and LOTS of treatments. They worked! But it burned some serious holes in my family’s pockets.
So before rushing to get the over-the-counter stuff, maybe you could try something natural, something relatively budget-friendly. Maybe you could try Matcha!
What is Matcha? Matcha is specially grown green tea leaves grounded into a fine powder. It contains an antioxidant called EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). It helps to get those crazy hormones under control; hormones under control means controlled sebum production, which is key because sebum contributes to clogged pores, the arch-nemesis of clear skin. EGCG also helps to prevent a build-up of bacteria in the skin. Matcha has anti-fungal properties too, so it’s fighting acne from different angles all day err day. The health benefits of Matcha are seemingly endless!
Blowfish face (Inflammation issues)
Puffy skin..bleh. Under-eye bags big enough to carry water… double bleh. These things happen. Whether it’s just the way your skin is or a response to say, all those late nights around the computer investing in that side hustle. Sure, makeup can help you out, but again, why not address the root issue? The EGCG in Matcha can help to reduce inflammation and the vitamin K it contains helps with those cringe-worthy dark under-eye circles.
Forever young (Does Matcha make you look younger?)
We love the sun. We enjoy the (mostly) year-round island sun here in Jamaica. Not a lot of people around the world can rock shorts and tank tops in December. But, we still need to protect our skin from the ‘dark side’ of the sun (ie, its harmful effects). The polyphenols and catechins found in Matcha can help to protect the skin from harmful effects of UV rays which can help to cause premature ageing. Thank you Matcha! ‘cause nuhbody nuh wah look ol’ before dem young. It also helps to stimulate and rejuvenate skin cells and slow cell degeneration. Tight, smooth skin? Yes please.
Of course, everyone’s skin is unique. What works for one might not work for another. So there will definitely be cases that require medical intervention.
Have a likkle system (Skin care routine)
So now that we know that Matcha can help with our skin, how do we actually incorporate it into our daily lives?
YouTube abounds with videos of women taking us into their bathrooms and walking us through their skin care routines. Some of them do the most with umpteen number of products and a hefty investment of time, but let’s be honest…most of us just don’t have that kind of time every day. So let’s keep it basic yet effective . Three simple steps –cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Say it with me…. cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Soun’ like yuh can manage?
Try incorporating Matcha into at least one step daily. To get you started, we’ll give you two that are DIYs – a toner and a moisturizing mask:
Toner:
Mix water and an essential oil of your choice with one of our PetitPoppers. The consistency should be light and watery. Store mixture in a spray bottle in your refrigerator. When you’re ready to apply your toner, just spritz away!
Mask:
Combine equal parts Matcha and coconut oil; apply mask all over face. Leave for 30 minutes and then remove with water. (Keep these two ingredients in mind, we’ll use them again soon! They’re a pretty versatile team!)
Summer Body year round
Getting our skin right is another way that we can work towards that ever-elusive summer body! So get your daily dose of Matcha, get those strappy dresses out and get ready to glow, baby, glow!
Matcha love!
